BUILDING PERMITS

A: A Building Permit is a document issued by a Registered Building Surveyor confirming that the plans and documentation for a proposed building work meet the requirements of the Building Code of Australia, The Building Act 1993 and the Building Regulations 2018.

A: A Building Permit is required before work commences on most new buildings, major renovations, extensions, alterations and demolitions.

A: A Building Permit is required for most building works including but not limited to:

  • New construction works
  • Structural repairs and alterations
  • Additions
  • Any alterations that changes the use, size or height of a building
  • Fences and pool barriers
  • Swimming pools and spas
  • Retaining walls and fences

A: Building Permits are required:

  • To ensure buildings are constructed in compliance with the Building Code of Australia, The Building Act 1993 and the Building Regulations 2018.
  • To verify that building practitioners are registered and appropriately insured.
  • To check that all documentation has been completed in compliance with regulations.
  • To ensure key stages of the building works meet the necessary and legally required standards

A: Permits are issued by registered Building Surveyors (such as Resiwise)

A: All nominated Mandatory Building Inspections are required. These vary depending on the project.

A: For residential/domestic works (excluding pools and spas) the works must commence within 12 months and be finalised within 24 months of the permit being issued.
